Description: The city of Sanford meets every week at the library. We are a beginner-friendly space. The club has chess sets and clocks for open play, with experienced members present to help beginners. There are monthly themed tournaments for specific strategies or clock settings, too.
Alfred Chess Society (10 miles away from Sanford)
Location: Alfred Parish Church – 12 Kennebunk Rd, Alfred, ME 04002
Description: This small and intimate group meets biweekly in the hall of a historic church. The club is a good mix of casual games and organized playing, also some chess theory lectures as an auxiliary way to improve. That trickles out across York County, as their annual winter championship brings players in from all over.
Wells-Ogunquit Chess Collective (15 MILES FROM SANFORD)

Description: Coast 21, this chess club meets every other Saturday to play competitive and non-competitive games. The club has a library of chess books for lending and also holds from the time to time simuls with local masters.

Notes: This local club has a monthly rated tournament in and around York County at various locations including some in the Sanford area. They run USCF-rated events (of all types, including quick games) and attract both juniors, as well as adults looking for casual tournament play.
Lebanon Chess Meetup (12 Sanford miles)

Description: Low key country chess meet for all :-)Family friendly – All there will be casual chess in Canadian rural setting once a month.- we being the employers players and families. The club is based around having fun, the social contract of playing each other and plays a fair few vic/frc games in parallel.
