Waterville Chess Club

Summary: The Waterville Chess Club meets weekly at the public library, and is a friendly environment to come play chess. The club has chess sets and clocks for general use, and there are experienced members who are willing to teach beginners. Themed events, covering some aspect of chess strategy from the opening to the endgame, are held monthly.

About: A club focused mainly on college students, but your average townie can’t keep themselves and actually gets members to go to the meetings each week. The organization provides casual games, blitz tournaments and now and again a lecture on chess theory. They also have a chess library and provide online access to printed sources.
If you’d prefer something a little more local, the Oakland Chess Club (5 miles from Waterville)
Where: Oakland Public Library- 18 Church St, Oakland, ME 04963
Description: This friendly group meets every other week at the Oakland library to play and practice. The team remains friendly to all, and even welcomes the occasional local specialist for it’s A-Simuls!
Central Maine Chess Association (Several Locations)
Description: This club features brigade rated tourneys held once every three months across the county including some in Waterville. The events are USCF rated and include sections for adults, from grandmasters to rank beginners estimated at fewer than 299 on the rating scale, as well as youth players.
Fairfield Chess Group (7 miles from Waterville.)
Where: Fairfield Public Library – 6 Lawrence Ave, Fairfield- ME 04937
Details: A small, dedicated chess-in-the-park gang for the casual of it once a month. The casual feel is ideal for the beginner or those who are curious and want to play chess without all that pressure.
